Talking to Danny Kelly on BBC WM and Elliott Webb on BBC Hereford & Worcester about whether Boris should apologise over his comments that Muslim women who wear full veils look ridiculous.
It’s the silly season for the media and this is a storm in a teacup. I don’t know what his motive was in making the remarks, but they were clearly well thought out and not off the cuff, designed to grab headlines.
If anyone is genuinely offended by them, then perhaps he should apologise to them, but his comments were not racist, he is not a racist and I believe some people are too quick to claim they are offended and to be offended on behalf of others.
I agree with his fundamental point, that in a free society it would be wrong to ban women from wearing the burka or niqab, providing their decision is made without coercion. The problem for many people is the suspicion that a level of coercion does exist, whether the women concerned actually accept that or not.
Practice shows the more you ban something the bigger an issue it becomes, and the more determined people become to pick up that particular mantle.
