James Carver MEP (Independent West Midlands)
West Midlands MEP James Carver is calling on the EU to pressurise Iran, Saudia Arabia and the UAE to halt the world's worst man-made humanitarian disaster in Yemen, after an acklnowdgement in parliament that the conflict is a proxy war.
Austrian Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, Karin Kneissl - Austria having just takien over Presidency of the Council - was giving evidence to the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) yesterday, when Mr Carver asked who was to blame for the war that has so far cllaimed the lives of more than 9,000 people, including in excess of 5,500 civilians.
He said: "Her answer was significant, as she confirmed her view was that the conflict was a proxy war. This contradicts some of the statements coming out of the EU, as they argue it is an internal conflict and can only be solved by the clans and groupings in Yemen.
"The logical conclusion is that the EU now needs to pressurise Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to halt the conflict."
