UKIP West Midlands MEPs James Carver and Bill Etheridge believe the face of British politics has been changed forever following news that a senior Eurosceptic Tory MP has defected to UKIP.
Douglas Carswell has today forced an immediate by-election in Clacton after announcing that he had left the Tories to join UKIP.
At a press conference held in London earlier today, which was also attended by UKIP Party Leader Nigel Farage, Mr Carswell said the decision had given him “sleepless nights” but he was determined to see “fundamental change” in British politics”.
Welcoming the news today UKIP West Midlands MEP James Carver said: “Mr Carswell had been a significant figure in the Eurosceptic movement and his decision today to resign from Parliament and stand as UKIP’s candidate in Clacton is an honourable one.
“He is giving people a real chance for people to have their say in Clacton at the ballot box. I welcome Mr Carswell to the UKIP team.”
Fellow West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge, said: “I believe Mr Carswell’s decision will fundamentally change British politics forever.
“The Tories are failing Britain and only UKIP is standing up for the interests of this nation.
“I now look forward to assisting the fight in Clacton. UKIP’s ‘people’s army’ is proud to welcome Mr Carswell to its ever swelling ranks.”
