Local MEP James Carver has described the free movement of people across Europe as a “security risk”.
Mr Carver, UKIP Euro-MP, made his comments in the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris.
“To give our security services a fighting chance of catching extremists intending to target UK cities we need proper border controls.
“Frighteningly the refugee crisis, involving hundreds of thousands of people fleeing IS-controlled territory in countries like Syria, provides terrorists with an ideal pportunity to infiltrate western Europe with the help of criminal gangs.
“UKIP warned in April that the new EU approach to migration would lead to unprecedented waves of migration across Europe, and we have been shown to be right.
“When terrorists can move from country to country without having to show a passport the ability of security services to have a realistic chance to prevent attacks is severely handicapped.
“Thousands of people are paying ruthless smugglers and making perilous journeys across Europe. It’s plain that such networks are susceptible to being used for terrorism.
“The European Union is out of touch with the grim reality and the Commission President is already saying that there is no need for change policy.
“But I believe EU policy must change to protect the UK from a terror attack like those that claimed 129 lives in Paris on Friday,” who sits on the EU's Foreign Affairs Committee.
