Government plans to introduce plain packaging on cigarettes is a fag end policy says a West Midlands MEP who believes the move could be a counterfeiters’ dream.
West Midlands MEP James Carver, UKIP’s Parliamentary Candidate for Stourbridge, says the proposals, to ban the branding of all tobacco products, could put smokers’ lives at risk and lead to an escalation in tobacco smuggling.
The plans to introduce standardised packaging have been also be attacked by The Tobacco Manufacturers Association who claim the proposals are based on dogma not evidence.
Mr Carver, who is a non-smoker, said: “These fag end proposals should be consigned to the ash tray.
“Plain packaging would be a counterfeiter’s dream and could put the lives of smokers at risk.
“Jobs and tax revenue would also suffer as a result of bringing in such ill-conceived legislation,” he added.
