Figures revealing that shop prices have fallen in the last 12 months have been welcomed by West Midlands UKIP MEP James Carver.
But he lamented the lack of media coverage to the news announced this week by the British Retail Consortium.
He said: “The figures show shop prices actually fell by one per cent in the year to March 2018.
“This is good economic news which, predictably, is getting very little coverage.
“However, the fact is that shop price deflation speeded up last month, driven by a large slowdown in food inflation, which reached its lowest rate for a year.
“As the impact of the pound’s depreciation one year on is beginning to fizzle out, retailers are passing the positive impact through to the shop floor.”
