Proportional representation is the only fair system to reflect the political landscape and give the man and woman on the street a truly democratic voice, said West Midlands MEP James Carver at a rally in Birmingham.
He was one of several cross-party speakers to address shoppers and passers-by in Victoria Square as the Make Votes Matter roadshow rode into the city on Saturday.
Mr Carver, an independent Euro MP, said: “It was a good opportunity to outline the advantages of a system of proportional representation that would produce a majority not minority rule, allowing political diversity, with votes mattering in every seat not just marginals, resulting in more political engagement, a higher turnout and a more equal society.
“Most modern democracies use some form of PR and yet the UK insists on flogging an outdated, flawed first past the post system, leaving the British people tethered in a two-party race. High time for a change!”
