MEP anger over proposed limousine costs

Plans to spent millions more pounds on luxury limousines for MEPs further stretches incredulity at EU financial waste, said local UKIP MEP James Carver today.

“They are driving a horse and cart through any sort of economic restraint and doing so in grand style with these proposals.”

The European Parliament currently uses contracted-out driver services but there is now a plan to provide the chauffeurs and limousines themselves.

The annual transport costs are €6.8million but keeping it in house will add another €3.7 million to that bill - including €116,000 a year on drivers’ uniforms.

“It is bad enough that British taxpayers money is spent on chauffeur driven transport in the first place without this ludicrous idea to spend even more on it,” said  Mr Carver.

“Security is being given as a reason for the change but I personally am unaware of any problems necessitating it. And €1000 a year for each driver’s uniform is just a joke,” he added

The proposals are being voted on later today.
