UKIP West Midlands MEP James Carver has today threw down the gauntlet to Tory MPs in the region by challenging them to a public debate following the shock defection of Eurosceptic politician Douglas Carswell.
Mr Carver, says the Tories are ‘running scared’ of UKIP which welcomed Douglas Carswell to its ranks last week.
The Tories suffered another major blow this week with the announcement that Conservative Dudley South MP Chris Kelly is to stand down at the 2015 general election after serving just one term in office.
He has not given a reason for his decision. On Twitter Conservative MP Conor Burns said he was “disappointed” that Mr Kelly would not be contesting his Dudley South seat and tweeted “we are losing the wrong people”.
Commenting today West Midlands MEP James Carver said: “The terrified Tories are clearly in crisis and running scared of Nigel. Farage’s ‘people’s army’.
“I challenge local Conservative MPs to participate in a debate on a date that would be convenient to all involved. My message to MPs is a simple one – have you got the bottle to take up my challenge?
“Douglas Carswell’s honourable decision to join UKIP has left the Tories reeling. A new poll by Survation gives UKIP and Mr Carswell a massive 44-point lead over the Conservatives in Clacton.
“The political landscape is turning increasing purple. I call on MPs to pick up my gauntlet and take part in a debate on the ever-changing face of British politics and how that face is increasingly a Eurosceptic one.”
