West Midlands UKIP MEP James Carver is urging the TUC to save itself from annihilation by pulling back from its anti-Brexit stance at next week’s conference and support the majority view of its members.
Mr Carver, a former member of the Communication Workers Union, said: “The TUC is in the last chance saloon and workers will call time on it if its hierarchy continues to press for remaining in the single market and customs union.
“Their mantra of ‘making jobs and prosperity a priority’ only makes sense if we leave the single market and the customs union, not the other way round, because only then will we be free of the shackles of EU rules and regulations imposed on us.
“Only then will we able to able to determine our own priorities, be that jobs, prosperity or living standards.
“The TUC has one last chance to redeem itself from becoming an irrelevance to millions of British workers. As an institution of the working man, I hope it does not turn its back on them in favour of the political elite ‘à la Guardian et al’ because that will be its death knell.”
