Champagne bottles popped as West Midlands UKIP MEP James Carver celebrated the triggering of Article 50 with party activists at his Kidderminster office yesterday.
A jubilant Mr Carver praised members for their hard work in campaigning for Brexit which resulted in the West Midlands having the highest regional leave vote in the UK in last June’s referendum.
He said the future was “looking very bright” as the country begins to take back its sovereignty, whilst maintaining a strong relationship with the European Union.
Mr Carver said: “We're certainly not anti-Europe, but the EU is not the club we originally signed up to. We want a good relationship with Europe but not political union.”
He added that UKIP now had a vital role to play in ensuring there was no backsliding or watering down during the negotiations by the Conservative government.
