James Carver MEP (Independent West Midlands)
Debate: The Situation in Syria
Recent history of intervantion by the West in the Middle East has shown fundamental flaws, but we mustn't allow a vacuum to develop in Syria, which could be exploited by those wishing to further their own agenda, said West Midlands MEP James Carver, speaking during a debate in Strasbourg today.
He said people, such as the Kurds, must be allowed to remain an important balance in the region, especially in relation to the protection of the different faith and ethnic groups across Middle East society.
Mr Carver added: "We must approach the future of Syria, both for the future prosperity of the Syrian people and for our own security and influence in the West, in a sensible and coherent manner."
